Cowrie Shell Necklace Choker
SKU: NJ375
A fun accessory for girls or boys. Cowrie shells were once used as currency in West Africa, and are now fabled for their ability to bring good luck.
This simple strand is put together by apprentice artisans and women learning jewelry making in Njau, Gambia. Sizes are assorted, most will fit teenage to adult necks as a choker. Knot/loop closure at one end. Cowrie shells measure about .75" each and overall length is 12-14".
This item was a sample practice creation made by the artisans as part of a new product contest. All artisans have been paid in advance.
This purchase supports the Njau Recycling and Income Generating group of over 70 rural women in Gambia. Most of the proceeds benefit the children of the community through school fees or better nutrition. The women of the cooperative also actively participate in health and literacy education through their environmental and other grassroots projects at the centre.
